The basic shape of the F1 car changed

Early World Championship cars placed the engine in front of the driver. By the end of the 1950s, successful rear-engined designs showed how moving major mass behind the driver could create a more effective racing package, and the front-engined layout quickly disappeared from Formula 1.

Wings made airflow a performance battleground

As Formula 1 engineers learned to use aerodynamic downforce, the shape of the car became as important as its engine output. Wings and increasingly sophisticated bodywork allowed cars to corner faster by pressing the tyres more firmly onto the track.

1970s AND 1980s

Ground effect and turbo power changed the scale

Lotus helped transform underfloor aerodynamics with ground effect in the late 1970s, while turbocharged engines became a defining performance route during the following decade. Both developments produced major gains and eventually prompted significant regulation changes.
