START HERESoft, medium and hard
For each Grand Prix, three slick compounds from the wider Pirelli range are designated hard, medium and soft. Softer rubber generally offers more immediate grip but gives up performance sooner, while harder rubber trades some grip for greater durability.
WEATHERSlicks are not the only tyres
Dry-weather slick tyres have no tread pattern because maximum rubber contact is useful on a dry track. Formula 1 also has intermediate and full-wet tyres for rain, giving teams different tools as water levels and grip conditions change.
THE WINDOWGrip depends on temperature
A tyre is not automatically at its best simply because it is new. Drivers must bring the tyre into a useful operating range. Too little temperature can mean weak grip, while excessive heat can damage performance and increase the rate at which the tyre falls away.
