Giuseppe Nino Farina won the inaugural World Championship Grand Prix at Silverstone for Alfa Romeo and later became Formula 1's first World Champion. His team-mates Juan Manuel Fangio and Luigi Fagioli were also central figures in that first championship season.
The creation of Formula 1 did not create Grand Prix racing itself. Major international motor races had existed for decades. After the Second World War, international motorsport authorities developed a new Grand Prix formula and moved toward turning leading races into a formal World Championship.
